Thermal Insulation

Thermal in­su­la­tion is about keep­ing hot things hot and cold things cold, con­serving en­ergy in the pro­cess.  And in times of in­creased en­vir­on­mental pres­sures and en­ergy costs, thermal in­su­la­tion is more im­port­ant than ever.

Hot processes lose heat from the surfaces of pipes, ductwork, vessels and equipment.  With the right insulation you can greatly reduce heat loss, protect workers from injury, reduce operating costs and lower greenhouse emissions.  Certain processes need specific temperatures in order to work properly.  Choosing the right insulation system can maximize long term savings while providing the most cost competitive solutions at the front end.

It takes a spe­cial kind of ex­pert to con­trol the freez­ing tem­per­at­ures of minus 163°C ne­ces­sary to handle, store and sup­ply li­que­fied nat­ural gas (LNG).  KAEFER has over 40 years of ex­per­i­ence in LNG and some say that those who work there quite lit­er­ally have the coolest job in the com­pany.

From high-per­form­ance in­su­la­tion at gas plants and pipelines to stor­age and trans­port­a­tion tanks, we provide a wide range of ser­vices and solu­tions for the whole gas hand­ling chain.

The KAEFER LNG Solu­tions Cen­ter is staffed with experts who are specialists in adapting and de­liv­er­ing soph­ist­ic­ated and in­tel­li­gent solu­tions and ser­vices to ma­jor LNG pro­jects.  We have de­veloped a pre-in­su­la­tion pro­cess for pipes, which is mod­u­lar and flex­ible, al­low­ing pipes to be in­su­lated ef­fi­ciently be­fore they are in­stalled on site.  This means they are not sub­ject to en­vir­on­mental vari­ables and the pro­cess saves time and money by en­sur­ing high qual­ity and lower levels of man­power and scaf­fold­ing.  Fur­ther­more, our sys­tem is highly mo­bile and can be set up in close prox­im­ity to large-scale pro­jects around the world – this shortens transit times and lowers costs as well.

KAEFER provides a pre-in­su­la­tion pro­cess that of­fers com­pel­ling be­ne­fits over con­ven­tional hand ap­plied meth­ods and has in­ves­ted heav­ily in re­search and de­vel­op­ment to re­fine a pro­cess that res­ults in a high-qual­ity over­all solu­tion that can be com­pleted any­where, on-time and at a com­pet­it­ive costs.

The pre-in­su­la­tion pro­cess is based around mod­u­lar-plant and fa­cil­it­ies that can be mo­bil­ised around the globe to ef­fi­ciently in­su­late the pipes at a more con­veni­ent loc­a­tion be­fore they are in­stalled on-site. The in­su­la­tion that is ap­plied within the plant is com­prised of sev­eral lay­ers of Poly­ureth­ane foam covered by a tough outer com­pos­ite shell.  

Along with ful­filling the primary in­su­lat­ing func­tions, the pre-in­su­lated pipe is also mech­an­ic­ally ro­bust and able to cope with the rig­ors of con­struc­tion fol­lowed by a long fu­ture of low-main­ten­ance op­er­a­tion. This sys­tem has proven it­self over the years in nu­mer­ous in­stall­a­tions.

Noise is un­healthy. Not just for people, but also for struc­tures as a res­ult of vi­bra­tion. KAEFER of­fers in­nov­at­ive and tailored solu­tions to deal with noise ef­fect­ively and ef­fi­ciently.

It all starts with meas­ure­ment. Our en­gin­eers ana­lyze noise levels and ori­gins with state-of-the-art equip­ment and de­ve­lop noise pro­tec­tion meas­ures that are tailored ex­actly and in­di­vidu­ally to each fa­cil­ity or build­ing. These are tested and de­ve­loped in our own acous­tic labor­at­ory, which fea­tures a wall test stand as well as a pipe in­su­la­tion test fa­cil­ity. That means we can of­fer high-qual­ity, cus­tom­ized sound ab­sorbers, acous­tic en­clos­ures, acous­tic screens as well as pipe and ves­sel in­su­la­tion com­bined with thermal re­quire­ments to our cli­ents.

Glycol Heat Tracing

Glycol Control Values

Glycol heat tra­cing is of­ten used pro­tect pipes, boil­ers, pumps and other equip­ment from frost in winter, or to keep warm wa­ter at a re­quired tem­per­at­ure.  It in­volves heat­ing the in­stall­a­tions by means of tubing con­tain­ing heated glycol that is strapped to the pipe or equip­ment, trans­fer­ring the heat of the glycol to the in­stall­a­tion.

Glycol heat tra­cing can best be sum­mar­ized as a series of closed loop tubing cir­cuits that trace the out­side of vari­ous sizes, and types of pro­cess pip­ing found in the oil and gas plants all throughout Canada.  In ad­di­tion to tra­cing pro­cess pip­ing, we also run our tra­cing lines to con­tour all dif­fer­ent kinds of devices and vari­ous makes and mod­els of valve work found in the oil and gas in­dustry.

Glycol heat tra­cing lines (com­monly re­ferred to as GHT cir­cuits) once in­stalled will have hot glycol cir­cu­lat­ing through them that will trans­fer heat en­ergy to the pipes and devices through a pro­cess called Thermal Con­duct­iv­ity.  It is through this pro­cess of thermal con­duct­iv­ity that we are able to en­sure that all items we are tra­cing have a re­li­able means of freeze pro­tec­tion set in place.

In the event that we ex­per­i­ence a less than de­sir­able weather con­di­tion, we can rest as­sured that both the plant's pipes and pro­cess equip­ment are all op­er­at­ing at their op­timum peak per­form­ance due to tem­per­at­ures that are now be­ing prop­erly main­tained.
